Who We Are
Kabangka is a youth-led and youth-centred leadership organization that unites young Filipino/a/x-Canadians to support Filipino/a/x-Canadian representation in a variety of sectors.
We are a registered not-for-profit which aims to create a space and support fellow Filipino/a/x-Canadian youth to network, learn new and develop existing skills, build connections, inspire action, and empower young people as leaders in their communities.
Our Board of Directors, alongside our Advisory Council ensures the quality and diversity of services and support to be utilized by our Filipino/a/x-Canadian community.
Origins of Kabangka
The name of this organization, Kabangka, is borrowed from a poem by Rachel Evageline Chiong. Kabangka can be translated from Tagalog to English, as being on the same boat as someone. The poem illustrates Filipinxs wading on a boat, one as a people, floating through their history and heading towards their futures. This spirit of oneness is one that Kabangka wants to instill in everything it does.
What We Do
Pinoys on Parliament
Pinoys on Parliament, also known as POP, is a national youth leadership conference for young Filipino/a/x-Canadians held annually Ottawa, Ontario.
In its inaugural year (2019), POP brought together over 100 young Filipino/a/x-Canadians across Canada. Through panels of Filipino/a/x leaders in various fields and workshops, POP provides young Filipino/a/x-Canadians with an environment where they can exchange perspectives on what it is like to grow up as a Filipino/a/x-Canadian and the obstacles that come with pursuing their individualistic careers.
Leadership and Learning
Kabangka is committed to sharing one-of-a-kind experiences and opportunities for involvement, leadership, and learning.
Leadership and Learning provides in-person or virtual panels and workshops throughout the year on issues relevant to youth to develop tangible skills.
Topics may include:
Financial literacy
Public speaking or media training
Mental health and wellness
Safe and inclusive workplaces
Community organizing
Mentorship
Originally a part of Pinoys on Parliament, the Kabangka Mentorship Program is dedicated to young Filipino/a/x-Canadians to connect with trailblazing leaders in their areas of interest, academia, or professional pursuits, while building strong relationships and connections.
National Scholarship Program
The Filipino-Canadian National Scholarship Program aims to provide Filipino/a/x-Canadian youth equal opportunity to access higher education by reducing financial barriers and recognizing excellence in education, creative arts, and volunteer work, among other areas.
This program is run in partnership with the Golden Balangay Foundation and it was announced at our Pinoys on Parliament conference in 2024.
