Institute for Future Legislators at Toronto Metropolitan University
The Institute for Future Legislators is a 6-week program that seeks to engage thoughtful community members who are interested in exploring not only what today’s legislatures look like, but what could be - particularly those from groups underrepresented as legislators today. The Institute welcomes anyone who wants to understand what it looks like to be elected to office, leading with authenticity grounded in values, and transforming political representation. That includes people who may not see themselves or their aspirations reflected in today’s legislators, those who want to create change, and those who want to better understand how our governments work.
As a participant in the Institute, you will engage in intensive, hands-on workshops, and mentoring and training from current and former legislators, senior civil servants, high-profile journalists and successful advocates. The program, which runs over three weekends in May and June, culminates in a trip to Ottawa (pandemic permitting) and where participants put their learning into practice in an intensive parliamentary simulation.
The Institute encourages youth, women, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour and 2SLGBTQ+ folks to apply, and learn more about the role of gender and intersectionality in politics and the current political climate.

Apathy is Boring: RISE
An initiative under Canada Service Corps, RISE helps young people co-create community projects and contribute in strengthening our civic and democratic fabric by engaging on topics that interest them.
RISE is developing projects in seven cities across Canada: Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Halifax and Vancouver.
RISE is designed for young people aged 18-30 with little or no previous experience in volunteering.
Over the course of 22 weeks as a RISE Ambassador, you will develop skills, learn about community engagement, and work with your peers to build something meaningful together.
There are two cohorts each year: the spring cohort goes from January to June. The fall cohort goes from August to December. Youth ambassadors are expected to commit to six hours a week of volunteering: three hours at an in-person hub night and three hours of additional work.
There is also a mandatory all expenses paid weekend retreat at the beginning of each cohort. Ambassadors from across Canada come together to meet each other, build skills, and get inspiration for their projects.
